Solid Waste Management

Waste is defined as non-liquid material that no longer has any value to the person who is responsible for it. Words like rubbish, garbage, trash, or refuse are often used as synonyms when talking about solid waste. Waste has always been a perennial problem and its management remains a big predicament, since the amount of solid waste increases as populations rise and economies develop.
Waste Management System Includes the following elements:
  • Waste generation and storage.
  • Segregation, reuse, and recycling at the household level.
  • Primary waste collection and transportation.
  • Street sweeping and cleansing of places.
  • Management of the waste storage area.
  • Secondary collection and transport to the waste disposal site.
  • Waste disposal.
  • Collection, transport, and treatment of recyclables at all points on the solid waste pathway (collection, storage, transport, and disposal)
Types of Solid Wastes can be broadly categorized as:
Bio-Medical Waste: Biomedical waste (BMW) is "any waste produced during the diagnosis, treatment, or immunization of human or animal research activities pertaining thereto or in the production or testing of biological or in health camps". The best BMW management methods aim at avoiding generation of waste or recovering as much of waste as possible, rather than disposing (Source: Biomedical waste management Rule 2016)
Municipal Solid Waste Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) is a heterogeneous waste consisting mainly of paper, glass, metal and other substances produced by residential, commercial, Institutional and industrial activity. The quantity of MSW generated depends on a number of factors such as food habits, standard of living, degree of commercial activities and seasons
